Tamale North Member of Parliament (MP), Alhassan Suhuyini, has strongly criticised the government's approach to tackling illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
The Deputy Ranking Member of the Lands and Forestry Committee of Parliament has expressed dissatisfaction with the government's handling of the issue, describing it as lackadaisical.
According to him, the government has turned the fight against illegal mining into a "flagship of corruption."
During the debate on the 2024 budget statement on Thursday, November 23, the lawmaker accused the government of using the anti-galamsey efforts as a means to enrich its appointees.
Mr Suhuyini thus asked Ghanaians to rise and speak against this.
"Galamsey and the issue of fighting the menace is one of the biggest threats to our existence today. Mr Speaker, instead of defeating Galamsey like Covid-19, this government has turned the fight into a flagship of corruption and this flagship of corruption has benefited appointees and influence peddlers affiliated to the president and members of the government."
