The Communications Minister has announced that government would soon criminalise the dissemination of inappropriate social media content.
At the National Week Celebration of the Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful displayed samples of sexual images she described as inappropriate content.
She urged recipients of similar substance to immediately delete them and desist from disseminating them even further.
“The Ministry is working with the Attorney General, and Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, among others to come up with the framework on child online development and welfare within the shortest possible time,” she disclosed.
She added that many children, being avid users of social media content are unfortunately faced with a lot of challenges which are a breach of their human rights.
Owusu-Ekuful announced that since many of the country’s laws were made in an era prior to the advent of the internet, there should be more laws implemented to shield children from online abuse.
On her part, wife of the Vice President, Samira Bawumai, said a collaborative effort was required to steer children clear off online predators.
She said a 2016UNICEF report said for every 10 children and alarming four had viewed some form of sexual content and 50 per cent of the children surveyed expressed online abuse by adults.
Afisah Zakaria, Chief Director of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, urged service providers of sex sites to monitor and put measures in place so that children will not be granted access to those sites.
She added that policies will indeed soon be tweaked so that individuals sharing or retaining sexual content can be held accountable and sanctioned strictly by law.
