Antoine Griezmann has signed a contract extension with Atletico Madrid, ending speculation of a move to Manchester United this summer.
Griezmann excelled once again for Atletico this season, scoring 26 goals in all competitions, and the club confirmed on Tuesday that he has now put pen to paper on a deal that will tie him to the Madrid club until 2022.
"The first thing that I want to do is apologise to the people who misunderstood my statements," Griezmann told the club's website.
"Maybe I expressed myself badly or someone wanted to make news where there weren’t any, but since I came, I have given my all for my club, my teammates and my coaching staff, and I’m very happy to live one more season with all of you."
The French international had been thought to be on the verge of a move to Old Trafford, but a transfer ban for Atletico persuaded him to remain in La Liga, with the striker telling French media:
" It's a tough time for the club, it would be a dirty blow to leave now."
United, who released forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic last week, are reportedly targeting Alvaro Morata as an alternative solution to their striking issues.
According to Morata's agent, Juanma Lopez, United have made a "very important offer" for the 24-year-old.
Lopez revealed that free-spending AC Milan have also shown an interest in the former Juventus hitman but says Madrid have rejected an "unsatisfactory" offer from the Italian giants.
Lopez told www.calciomercato.com of United: "It's a club with a lot charm, a very interesting option.
"I can say that there's a very important offer and the decision now rests with Real."
