There is trouble brewing in the Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS), as the General Secretary Emefa Agonyo is calling for the arrest of Jonas Akese for holding himself as President of the Union.Miss Emefa Agonyo, now the Acting President in a rejoinder to an earlier publication by the National Secretariat on Thursday April 7, 2011, denied rumours that she acted alone to remove Mr. Jonas Akese from office.“I wish to clearly state that I the General Secretary, did not act on my own and or alone concerning the removal of Mr. Jonas Akese from office, however, seven member institutions per the constitution, Article 13(c), called for the General Assembly meeting [where the decision was reached]. (These are Ghana Institute of Languages, School of Social Works, Ghana Institute of Journalism, National Film and Television Institute, Ghana School of Survey and Mapping, African University College of Communications and Manifold Institute),” Miss Agonyo stated in a release to Adom News on Monday.She said she tried reaching Mr. Akese upon receiving a letter calling for a General Assembly but to no avail and so acted in accordance with Article 18(a) as the next in command after the President, by calling all national executives for a secretariat meeting to discuss the issue before the General Assembly comes off.According to her, the Coordinating Secretary Abena Obuo Adisi who is the administrative officer of the union sent a counter message asking all national executives not to attend the secretariat meeting which she ignored and went ahead with the General Assembly Meeting based on article 18(a), in the presence of other national executives. Emefa who now claims to be Acting President of the Union denied claims that she organized a General Assembly meeting on the 16th of March 2011, but rather on the 26th of March 2011, at the Ghana School of Survey and Mapping (GSSM).“I further wish to emphasize that Mr. Jonas Akese has been disregarded as the president of the union and also the Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service has been duly informed to effect any arrest whenever he impersonate himself as the president,” Emefa said.In a related development, the said deposed President (Jonas Akese) in another release on Monday 11th April, 2011 said, “Rising from a duly constituted General Assembly Meeting held at the University College of Management Studies (UCOMS) Accra, on the 7th of April 2011, the General Assembly has passed a vote of no confidence on the General Secretary (Emefa Agonyo) due to her misconducts."The release said henceforth, Emefa Agonyo ceases to be an officer of the Union with immediate effect.She said members of the National Secretariat had no authority to issue any counter press release disregarding that of the General Assembly, which is the second highest decision making organ of the union adding that, “all actions and activities of the national secretariat are subject to the General Assembly’s approval”.Source: Adom News
