Harrison Afful beat off competition from fellow Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan and his deputy Andre Ayew teammates to be named the 2014 Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Footballer of the year held at the State Banquet Hall yesterday.
The Colombus Crew right who was absent at the awards night was duly represented by Cooperate Manager of Hearts of Oak Joe Addo who received the award on his behalf.
His contribution to Esperance de Tunis sterling performances in 2014 coupled with his man of the match display against Germany in the FIFA World Cup propelled him to the award.
The former Kotoko man who joined MLS side Columbus Crew in the summer has already made his mark in the United States claiming the man of the match accolade in one of his sides’ games.
Other winners on the night were;Jennifer Cudjoe who claimed Female Footballer of the year while Augustine Okrah claimed the Premiership Player of the year for 2014.
