Health officials in the Sekyere South District are working within the constraints of limited resources to improve health care services delivery.
The District Health Directorate is grappling with problems including inadequate staffing.
With a population of 117 thousand, the district has for the past two years had to make do with only three medical doctors and 68 nurses.
The doctor-patient ratio stands at one to over 37 thousand.
Located just 34 kilometers from Kumasi, the district can boast only of few tarred roads like the Kumasi-Mampong trunk road.
Access to health centres in remote areas like Hiama Nkyene and other scattered villages is so cumbersome many patients report to hospital late.
In spite of such challenges health officials say they are unperturbed.
Integrated Disease Surveillance and personnel training by the District Epidemic Management Committee and Community Health Officers are showing results.
The health directorate has also agreed with transport unions to assist in transporting pregnant women to nearby health facilities.
District Health Director, Dr. Abora Addo, told the half-year review meeting the commitment of staff and other stakeholders is reason for the success.
He is hopeful the posting of additional doctors and nurses to the area this year would make greater impact.
