The High Court in Accra will on February 14 decide whether the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs has jurisdiction to look into four petitions over a successor to late the Ga Mantse, Boni Nii Amugi II.
The four petitions are all seeking to nullify the purported installation of a new Ga Mantse.
The petitioners, Dr. Ebenezer Tackie of the Teiko Tsuru Royal Family of the Ga State along with representatives from two other royal families want the Judicial Committee to nullify the purported installation of Dr. Joe Blankson.
Dr. Blankson was said to have been installed the new Ga Mantse under the stool name King Tackie Tawiah III.
Dr. Blankson and Nii Akropong III, the respondents, are however contesting the capacity of the Regional House of Chiefs to sit on the matter.
Their lawyer, Willie Amarfio contends that the House of Chiefs which has authority over chieftaincy matters is not the proper forum for the matter because the defendants cited in the petition were not sued as chiefs.
Mr. Amarfio further contends that the petitioners themselves lacked capacity to pursue the matter.
Lawyers for the petitioners however, quoting sections of the Chieftaincy Act, argue that the substantive matter is a chieftaincy issue and falls squarely in the purview of the Regional House of Chiefs.
They also contend that the applicants failed to meet the fourteen day deadline allowed for them to put in their Statement of Claim after filing the application.
