Residents at Onyaadzi, Obontle, Krofuldo and Abaasa villages in Ajumaku-Enyan-Esiam District in the Central Region have expressed their utmost surprise with angst at the use of basic tools such as hoes, cutlasses and rakes by a road contractor working on a road linking their villages. The residents are shocked that instead of modern efficient equipment such as bulldozers and excavators, the contractor was using simple tools to construct the roads. The residents say as a result of the primitive equipment, work on the road is going at a very low pace. The road starts from Eyisem on the Esuahyia-Mankessim and passes through villages such as Onyaadzi, Obontle, Krofuldo, Abaasa. A resident told Asempa News she was surprised to see a contractor use such primitive implements for such a major road work in this present day, adding that “since I was born I have never seen any such thing in this town.” When contacted the District Chief Executive, Peter Light Koomson admitted the contractor was using the items mentioned but explained it was to create employment for the people in the area. He added that even though the contract was award by the Feeder Roads without their knowledge, the district is aware of the said road construction and what the contractor is using. Mr. Koomson explained it is a pilot project being undertaken by the Feeder Roads dubbed “Labour Intensive Road Construction”, to create employment for the local people, but stressed that where there is the need for heavy equipment, the contractor will use them. The DCE admitted that even though the construction is ongoing; the pace cannot be compared to the pace at which it would have that if heavy equipment were used. He blamed the Feeder Roads Department for shoddy road construction works saying the department does not furnish the various assemblies with copies of contracts that are signed on road constructions.
