When 30-year old KK died, his family went to his office and attacked one of his colleagues because it had been revealed to them by an oracle that he had killed KK. They believed the oracle even though they were aware that KK had had problems with his health from his school days. This is a typical Ghanaian attitude to death. We insist that no one dies a natural death and when death occurs we are not interested in the real cause. We will rather consult and work with what an oracle says and discard overwhelming scientific evidence.
One of the most absurd cases I have ever heard was the case of a 95-year old woman who died and her daughter-in-law was accused of killing her. The sad thing was that it was this same daughter-in-law who had nursed the old woman in the last 15 years of her life when none of her own children was willing to take up that onerous responsibility. I asked the family, “How long did you expect this woman to live before you will accept the fact that it is now time for her to go?”
My doctor friends tell me that so many of us are carrying diseases we are not aware of and keep adopting lifestyles that make the situation worse. There are people who are destroying their kidneys and lungs with various substances and yet when they die, we will have someone to blame. There are people whose diet is killing them but when they die, we will have some innocent person to blame for it. And because we always have someone to blame for death, we never take the cause of death seriously and we don't learn from the harmful lifestyles that killed our loved ones in order to avoid them. So, we keep harming and killing ourselves knowing that our people will never bother with why we died but will put the blame on someone else.
So knowing fully well that I shall not live forever, let me put a few things on record for the certain event of my death.
If you hear that I am dead, please don't go anywhere to look into it because I was not guaranteed to live forever. So, whenever I go and however I go, let me go in peace. Don't go blaming anyone for my death for I go with joy.
If you hear that I am dead, please don't say that I died an untimely death because no one gave me a specific number of years to live so how can you tell if it was not my time? From the leaves of the tree learn the lesson - green leaves fall and brown leaves also fall.
If you hear that I am dead, please don't mourn for me for I have enjoyed God's unmerited grace and favour and I have lived a full life. Whenever death comes, I shall go in peace and with happiness. So, if you must have a funeral for me, let there be laughter and jokes and happy songs and let there be thanksgiving unto God for being so good to me. You see, by the grace of God and by his enabling, I have lived a good life; I have run a good race and I have fought a good fight. So, all glory and praise to God.
If you hear that I am dead, please bury my wasted useless body quickly and get back to your lives. The fact is, the body you see on my death will not be me but the husk that I have left behind. The real me would be gone by the time you discover that I am dead. So, throw the husk away quickly and inexpensively and don't make any fuss over it.
If you hear that I am dead, let it remind you that you also will not live forever. So, take thought to your life and watch how you live so that death will not be a frightening prospect for you.
If you hear that I am dead, please don't come and read any insincere tributes at my funeral. If you cannot say the truth about me and about the impact of my life on you, then do me the favour of keeping your mouth shut. For I have asked God for one favour, that if there is a ghost then he should allow my ghost to haunt anyone who reads any insincere tribute at my funeral.
If you hear that I am dead, let those who love me not stop living. Let the vitality and fullness of your life be the only tributes to me. So if you hear that I am dead, put on your best dress and do the things you have always wanted to do but have not found time to do. Live the day as if it is your last day because someday, it would be for you, just as it has been for me.
If you hear that I am dead, please don't give the credit to any demon or evil spirit or witch. None of these has the power of life and death. Don't blame anyone for my death, no matter how it happens because death is the only certainty in life.
