President John Evans Atta Mills has assured Ghanaians of a free and fair elections come December 2012.
The 2012 polls will be Ghana’s sixth General Elections in the 4th Republic and will mark another watershed in the political history of the country if it passes without any eventualities.
President Atta Mills who was addressing the 3rd General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbytarian Church (EP) in Ho on Thursday said he took over from his predecessor, former President Kufuor, peacefully and will ensure nothing is done to disturb the peace in the country.
He however gave a strong indication that he will win the 2012 elections.
"I want to assure the people of Ghana that come January 7, 2017, I will hand over a peaceful nation."
“I would want to promise you that as a government, we will ensure that we have free and transparent elections,” he assured.
There have been fears that the nation will be plunged into turmoil if the current rate of heated exchanges between key political protagonists does not abate.
Opposition New patriotic Party (NPP) have also, on a number of occasions, urged government to ensure that nothing is done to undermine the democratic achievement of the nation ahead of the elections.
The flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo who appeared on Multi TV’s Minority Caucus on Monday called on the Electoral Commission to ensure that the biometric voters register allows for authentication in order to check cheating.
He said Ghana needs to learn from other nations such as Ivory Coast who have wrongly implemented such biometric voters register and have been faced with difficult challenges that left the country devastated.
