An estimated seven to ten million Africans may have been thrown into poverty as a result of the world economic down-turn. But Africa also experienced the quickest recovery from the crisis among all world regions.
This was revealed by the Chief Economist of the World Bank, Africa region, Dr Shanta Devarajan in an interview with Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah on Wednesday.
His comments come amidst suggestions that African countries, particularly Ghana, have shrugged off the impact of the World Economic crisis and are on track to meet a number of the Millennium Development Goals.
“The crisis has put us further off track,” he said, adding “the estimated poverty rate in Africa would have been 36 per cent by 2015 but now we re-estimated it to be about 38 per cent.”
“So it is two percentage points; but two percentage points, keep in mind, is 20 million people. So there are 20 million addition people who will be in poverty as a result of the crisis. That is significant,” he noted.
