The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to implement a contingency plan to address the various challenges confronting the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
Expressing concern over the difficulties encountered during the registration process, Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed the necessity for the EC to devise alternative measures to overcome the hurdles hindering eligible individuals from registering.
After visiting a voter registration centre on Thursday, May 9, Mr Afenyo-Markin highlighted the urgency for the EC to establish a backup plan to facilitate the registration of every eligible voter within the stipulated timeframe.
He expressed apprehension that if the registration exercise continues at its current pace, only a limited number of individuals will successfully register.
This, he emphasised, should be a matter of concern for the EC as it undermines the inclusivity and effectiveness of the electoral process.
To mitigate potential challenges and ensure the successful completion of the registration exercise, the Efuttu MP called upon the Commission to implement a backup system.
“The Electoral Commission must improve on its system of registration. Obviously, if we are all talking about network failures, then I am not sure that they will be able to complete on schedule. The frustrations and the delays must be addressed."
“So I am urging the Electoral Commission to ensure that they have a backup system because as it is, the frustrations are one too many. And I would encourage the Electoral Commission to live up to expectations.”
