A new law in China requiring children to visit their aging parents is getting both praise and ridicule online. On Monday, a local court in the city of Wuxi issued the first sentence under the "Protection of the Rights and Interests of the Elderly" law. The legislation mandates offspring to take care of their parents over the age of 60 and visit them regularly. In the law's first application, a 77-year-old woman sued her daughter and son-in-law for failing to visit. The couple was ordered see her every two months or else face a fine or possible detention.
News of the law led to mixed reactions online. Some praised the idea of mandatory parental visits, while others argued it goes too far.
On Sina Weibo, China's most popular social media site, choiseongho writes: Today, “return home often for a visit” was written into Chinese law... what is unknown is whether this is a step forward or a step backwards, the result is: If you aren't careful, you might have committed a crime. In a poll conducted on Weibo, the majority of respondents supported the new law.
