Interior minister, Mark Woyongo is demanding compromises from the regent of Bimbilla and butchers there to resolve conflict that resulted in the death of 19 people in July this year.

The disturbances which also led to the burning of seven houses is said to have occurred when the butchers refused to perform some traditional rites associated with their occupation.

The town is currently under a 4pm to 6am curfew but interior minister Mark Woyongo says any decision to relax the curfew hours will be informed by resolution reached by the butchers and the regent of Bimbilla.

“Until we see to it that they’ve made some compromises, because some of them don’t want to make compromises but I think that in every situation at least there is the need for us to make compromises in the name of peace so that is what we trying to reach with the regents including the butchers”.

The interior minister has also been speaking about the continuous curfew imposed on the Nakpanduri Township following communal violence between the Bimobas and the Konkomba.

Though the feuding faction have signed a peace pact and performed all necessary rites to avoid a recurrence of the conflict, the town is still under a 12 hour curfew.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the area Solomon Namliit Boar thinks the town deserves freedom.

He believes that the curfew is “needless and counterproductive” because the residents need to live a life of dignity if they have to carry out economic activities.

He called on the Interior Ministry to liaise with District Security Council (DISEC) urgently and lift the curfew so that “the people can live in dignity”.

But Mark Woyongo says any decision to lift the curfew will have to come from the district security council.

“If we have to lift any curfew, we expect that the District Assembly or the District Security Council will make a recommendation to the Regional Security Council that there is peace so there recommend that review the curfew hours or lift it completely”.
