A Deputy Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made an urgent appeal to religious leaders in the country to find out if Ghana is under spiritual attack.
Samuel Awuku says recent happenings in the country, on both the political and social scene, give cause for such an enquiry.
“Nowadays, you see wives killing husbands, husbands killing wives, girlfriends…lawlessness everywhere. The Ghanaian appears to have lost hope in everything, including the Mills-Mahama government. Religious leaders, this is the time Ghana needs you,” he stated on Adom FM's morning show, Dwaso Nsem on Friday June 15 during a panel discussion.
He said many of the events, such as the religious clash in Hohoe, appeared to have a larger spiritual dimension, and pleaded with religious leaders to move beyond preaching to interceding with God on the nation’s behalf.
While not blaming the police for the recent violent incidents in the country, especially in Ekumfi Narkwa and Hohoe, he wondered what measures are being taken to ensure the police act in a professional manner.
He also faulted President Mills for failing to speak on the religious clashes in Hohoe. “Where is our President? Why hasn’t he said a word about the recent events, to at least calm people down?”
However, Deputy Propaganda Secretary of the NDC, Solomon Nkansah, dismissed calls by the opposition for the President to comment on the Hohoe and Ekumfi Narkwa incidents, insisting the security agencies were on top of the issues.
He cited the recent arrest of a group of robbers suspected of shooting a security officer and a NADMO official on the Suhum portion of the Accra-Kumasi highway a few weeks ago.
“This is clear evidence that the Police and other security agencies know what they are about. Why should President Mills come and say anything (on the Hohoe incident)? The Chief Imam has gone there; the Regional Security Council has been meeting; the chiefs are talking. What again should the President say?”
In another development, Samuel Awuku has questioned why the Director in charge of Human Resource Development of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police Alhaji Hamidu Mahama was still at post despite passing the official retirement age.
“Even if he has been given a one year contract, as is being rumoured, the normal thing is that such an individual loses one rank and takes off his uniform, but this officer is still at post with his rank and still wearing his uniform. What is happening?”
