The Israeli Embassy in Ghana held a memorial service on October 8, to mark the first anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel.

The solemn event honoured those killed and provided comfort to the bereaved families, with attendees including members of the diplomatic corps, church representatives, and traditional authorities.

A chilling video recorded by the Israeli Defense Forces during the attack was shown, alongside a photo exhibition of the victims.

A Christian prayer for Israel’s protection was led by Bishop Dick Essandoh of Action Chapel while the Chief Rabbi from the Jewish Community in Ghana led a Judaism prayer.

In his speech, Israeli Ambassador-designate Roey Gilad called the attack “the darkest day in Israel’s history.”

He recounted his personal experience on that day, noting how he and his wife were preparing for the weekend when they were alerted by air sirens.

The attack, which he described as unprecedented horror, saw 1,200 Israelis murdered and 251 abducted to Gaza, including young people attending a music festival.

Mr Gilad highlighted that the abductees were of various nationalities and religions, including Jews, Muslims, Christians, Israelis, Americans, and Russians.

He expressed concern that only a few had been rescued, with 101 still in Hamas captivity.

Ambassador Gilad also acknowledged Israel’s ongoing challenges, mentioning threats from groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and others across the region.

Ms. Louisa Hanson, Director of the Middle East Bureau at Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, conveyed Ghana’s condolences to the people of Israel.

She expressed concern about the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and reaffirmed Ghana’s support for Israel’s right to exist within secure borders, as well as the Palestinian right to self-determination.

Ms Hanson urged both sides to work towards peace without room for terrorism or anti-Semitism.
