A professor of political science, Professor Atsu Aryee says frequent reshuffles in any Government bestows a bad image on the said Government to the effect that the president is either not on top of issues or that his ministers are incompetent. “Reshuffling should not be done hastily or often because it actually gives a bad image of the government that either the government is not on top of things or his Ministers are incompetent”. He told Citi News in an exclusive interview. Professor Aryee added that although ministerial reshuffles are a justified prerogative of the President, that discretion should not be abused. “It is understandable that the government can make reshuffles but major reshuffles like this should not be done frequently”. He added According to him after the first year of any government one can justify the need to move some appointees around; however, Prof. Aryee believes that ministers must be allowed a minimum of two to three years to make an impact. “Ministers need two to three years to make an impact but after one year and you change them you do not give a good image of your government”. He said. Professor Aryee who is also the Deputy Vice Chancellor and head of the college of humanities at Kwazulu Natal University in South Africa, added that it is unpardonable for the president to carry out a major reshuffle just after one year of his presidency when his ministers were getting familiar with their ministries. “This is a major one so it is unpardonable to make such a major reshuffle just after one year in government”. He added. President Mills carried out his first reshuffle on Monday 25 January which saw top minister lose their jobs and others relocated to other Ministries. Source: Citifmonline.com
