A plot by a jilted husband to poison two of his stepchildren has gone awry, resulting in four other schoolchildren being poisoned.
Two of the children have been discharged from the Jomoro Government Hospital, while four others are still on admission.
The suspect, Kwesi Obeng Aboagye of Elubo Pataase in the Jomoro District of the Western Region, is alleged to have poisoned a meal he prepared for his two stepchildren, but four other children also ate the poisoned food because the suspect’s stepchildren shared the meal with them.
Aboagye is alleged to have undertaken the dastardly act as a way of paying back his estranged wife because she decided to end their marriage.
He is alleged to have prepared the meal and sent it to the Pataase Roman Primary School at Elubo where the two stepchildren are pupils.
Aboagye is said to have given the food to a passer-by to be given to the children, while he (Aboagye) waited under a nearby tree to observe events.
After receiving the food, the two children shared it with four other schoolchildren.
After the children had eaten the food, some teachers saw some of them reeling in pain, while some fell unconscious, and subsequently rushed them to hospital.
When contacted, the Jomoro District Police Commander, DSP John F. Dzineku, said the apprehensive mother of the two children expressed shock at the development and said she had left the husband because of his violent sexual approach to her.
According to DSP Dzineku, the woman claimed she had abandoned the marriage because Aboagye never made love to her at home but always sexually assaulted her on the farm or in the bush, a practice which she objected to.
He said the suspect was due for court on Monday in a case of fraud pending against him.
