A former Justice of the Supreme Court, V.C.R.A.C Crabbe has bemoaned the excessive partisanship that has characterised politics in Ghana, saying this has resulted in selfishness, envy and greed. According to Justice Crabbe, Ghanaians have become overly individualistic at the expense of the communal good. He made the comments at the formal launch of the B.J. da Rocha Chair in Law and Politics annual lecture at the Mountcrest University College, Accra. The lecture was instituted in memory of the late B.J. da Rocha, a legal luminary and founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Sharing his personal life experiences, Justice Crabbe, who is also a former Chairman for the Electoral Commission, recalled how personalities such as Mr. K. B. Asante, played key roles in shaping his life. Crabbe recalled how as a young and ambitious man, Mr. K.B. Asante ably assisted him by introducing him to the Commonwealth to start his professional life as a lawyer. K. B's advice, he said, greatly impacted his life positively. Justice Crabbe however, expressed worry over how things have changed suddenly, with partisan politics taking the centre stage of the nation’s development agenda. He noted that, rather than promoting the nation as a people, Ghanaians end up demonizing, sabotaging and assassinating the character of fellow countrymen who show so much promise in their chosen fields of endeavor. “It is regrettable that leading personalities such as J.B. Danquah, Prof. Kofi Abrefa Busia, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and a host of others who dedicated all their lives to the service of our country, had to die rather shamefully and regrettably, in prison and in exile”. This attitude of the modern day Ghanaian has become so pervasive that today the current generation of Ghanaians do not have people to look up to as heroes, he added. “As a country, we should develop the culture of honoring and celebrating our heroes in their life time as opposed to the current situation of waiting to do so posthumously”. The J.B. da Rocha Chair in law is a platform created to keep the memories of illustrious sons and daughters of Ghana alive, by reliving their works and principles. The inaugural lecture will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at the auditorium of the Ghana Law School with Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament and former Attorney General, Joe Ghartey as the main speaker. The Rector of the Mountcrest Law School, Prof Astu Aryee disclosed that there are a number of chairs that would be outdoored in the course of the year, and which will focus on research and honour illustrious Ghanaians in their fields of endeavour.
