Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has charged voters in Fomena to ignore his colleague Andrew Asiamah Amoako if he does not rescind his decision to contest as an independent candidate in the constituency.
According to him, the MP choosing to stand independently for the 2020 general elections is a disrespect to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under whose umbrella he was voted into parliament.
Speaking at the campaign launch, Mr Agyapong said that Mr Amoako risk being ousted by the party if he fails to take heed of the President’s advice and step down as an independent candidate.

“If he rescinds his decision to go independent I will personally lead the lobby for him after the elections. However, if he decides not to listen, then he has no love for the NPP and we will treat him as such.”

“We shall campaign against him with everything we have. As for this one I can promise him. I have tried to call him several times but he has not responded. I pray he sees reason,” he stated.

Mr Agyapong implored the people to vote massively for the new NPP candidate Philip Ofori Asante aka POFA at a well-attended campaign launch in Kyekyewere, in Fomena.

The highlight of the launch was the address by Mr Agyapong and the reception accorded Aspirants Unite4Victory, the umbrella movement for unsuccessful NPP aspirants who are campaigning vigorously for the President and parliamentary candidates all over the country.

At least 20 members of Aspirants Unite4Victory, stormed Fomena and shared their resolve to remain in the party despite their bitter experiences.

One of the conveners said that although they lost the primaries in their constituencies "under very painful circumstances" they have stuck to the party.

"We did not go independent because we believe the party is supreme. An independent candidate is cancerous to the NPP.
"Nana Addo needs an overwhelming majority in parliament so he can continue with his brilliant efforts to change Ghana."

"No matter how unfairly treated we felt by constituency executives, District or Municipal Chief Executives, we believe we hurt the overall party if we decide to pursue and independent agenda.”

The MP for Nhyiaeso, Kennedy Kankam, who also serves as an Aspirants Unite4Victory convenor stated that a party member choosing to be an independent candidate is setting themselves up against the party, the President and all the things they stand for.

“In politics, you take whatever comes your way but you should always be positive about your future in the party. I will therefore urge Amoako Asiamah, my colleague in parliament to step down. All our votes must go to Philip Ofori Asante.”

Former MUSIGA president Bice Osei Kufuor aka Obuor who was unsuccessful in the Asante Akyem South constituency also echoed Kennedy Kankam’s assertion.

“We follow the party, not individuals. It is about the elephant. No matter how painful your circumstance is, you should never let the independent candidate idea gain grounds in your mind. POFA has been with you and you know him. Let’s vote massively for him and the President.”

Other speakers at the Fomena campaign launch were Dr. Nsiah Asare, the Presidential advisor of Health and Henry Kokofu, the Executive Secretary of the Environmental Protection Agency as well as Mr. Sam Payne, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti region.
