MP for Adansi-Asokwa and former Energy Minister, K.T. Hammond has urged the government to retrieve outstanding taxes to the tune of $75million from multinational oil and gas exploration company, Tullow.
The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP says the company is in a lot of difficulties and is preparing to fold up and leave the country.
“They are selling out…if you have the asking price of a few billions, you can have it,” the legislator asserted.
According to Mr. Hammond, Tullow’s problems are linked to their expansionist policies which “became a complete failure.”
Speaking on the floor of Parliament during debates on President Nana Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Address, he said the monies they used for those overseas establishments are from benefits they got from their exploits in Ghana.
He said they have not been paying taxes as well and they now owe the country some $75million.
“They have not been fair to Ghana,” the MP lamented while speaking to journalists outside the chamber of Parliament on Thursday.
He insists the company has short-changed Ghanaians.
The MP, however, did not stop with Tullow.
K. T. Hammond has also been going after another oil-producing firm, Anadarko.
According to him, the company, after it was sold, does not want to honour its taxes in excess of $500 million.
He has charged the Ghana Revenue Authority not to allow them to go unless the monies are paid in full.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsnite, energy expert, Kojo Opoku, agreed with the MP that Tullow is facing some difficulties.
He, however, disagreed that the company could fold up soon. He said the company should also have no qualms honouring the said $75million the MP claims they owe.
