A 27-year-old man has been arrested by the police in Kumasi for dealing in fake CFA franc notes.
Akwasi Asare was caught at Odeneho Kwadaso, a suburb of Kumasi with a bundle of the CFA notes and neatly cut paper of the sizes of the US dollar.
Also seized from him were chemicals believed to be used in printing the illegal notes, cotton wool and a bandage.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Thomas Owoahene Acheampong, Ashanti Regional Mobile Officer of the Ghana Police Service told the press that an accomplice known only as "Apino"
managed to slip away.
Asare's arrest followed a tip off.
An informant heard the suspect and "Apino" engaged in an argument over the fake currency in Asare's room and alerted the police.
ASP Achampong said they quickly moved in and arrested him but his
accomplice escaped.
He said a search of his room uncovered sulphur-looking substance in
three polythene bags, some yellowish substance in a bottle, a quantity of well-cut pieces of paper, a bundle of fake CFA notes,
cotton wool and bandage.
He said they were making every effort to apprehend "Apino" and bring the two to justice.
Meanwhile the police have cautioned the public to be careful in
business transactions involving huge sums of money.
This follows the swindling of a car dealer, who was paid GH¢11,000 in fake GH¢20 cedi notes.
