The police in Kumasi have intercepted about five hundred sacks of fake fertilizer products from a syndicate in the metropolis. The Buffalo Unit of the Police arrested two suspects at Alabar, a suburb of Kumasi, Thursday evening. They are alleged to be part of a syndicate engaged in faking products of Yara Ghana, a leading producer and distributor of mineral fertilizer. Sources at the Police say the substance are suspected to be sand deposits from the sea shore mixed with other particles. Officials of Yara Ghana are worried at the rise of the fertilizer falsification on the market. Retail and Sales Manager, Henry Otoo Mensah tells Luv FM the syndicate operates in different parts of the country, stating that they imitate all products of Yara and bag them in old sacks of the company for onward marketing to unsuspecting farmers. “Presently we’ve identified a few people in Bechem who are engaged in this type of activity, we have arrested a few of them and they are helping us to identify the source of their fertilizer. We’ve got a few people from Pusiga, Bolga, Navrongo and in Tamale...We want to make sure that we weed these people out of the system so that they don’t sell bad fertilizers to our farmers”, he said. Mr. Otoo Mensah also noted the company is instituting measures to protect farmers, stating that “What we have done also is to make sure that our retailers who sell our products would be certified, then we will have a certain sign post that will enable farmers to identified them so that they can buy the appropriate fertilizer from them”. Meanwhile, the police in Kumasi are expected to begin investigations into the operations of the syndicate. Story by Kofi Adu Domfeh/Luv FM/Ghana
