Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Ing. Kwabena Agyepong, has entreated the party to elect its next presidential candidate by December 2025 to ensure adequate time for preparation ahead of the 2028 general elections.
According to Agyepong, an early leadership decision would help diffuse internal tensions and allow the party to focus fully on rebuilding its structures and regaining public confidence following its 2024 electoral defeat.
His comments come as the NPP continues its internal review of the 2024 election outcome and charts a path for political recovery.
In an interview with Channel One TV on Tuesday, 29 April, Agyepong stated, “I think we should do it by December this year [2025]. It should be done as quickly as possible.”
He emphasised that a timely flagbearer election would allow the party to turn its attention to grassroots mobilisation and party restructuring.
“We would have expanded the base first. We need to build what I’m calling the constituency caucuses. We have executives in place; their mandate hasn’t expired. Once we elect a flagbearer, all members have to support the candidate,” he added.
Agyepong’s call adds to the growing discourse within the NPP regarding the future direction of the party as it seeks to reposition itself ahead of the next electoral cycle.
