A political scientist, Dr. Kwesi Jonah has condemned reports of violence during the National Executive Conference of the New Patriotic Party held over the week-end.
“This kind of intolerance is unacceptable in any kind of democratic politics,” he said in an interview with Joy News' Matilda Asante Asiedu on Monday.
Ex-president Kufuor in his address at the conference lamented the emerging intolerance which was crippling into the party and called for unity. But that appeared not to have made any impact on some party activists.
Mohammed Amin Anta, former Metropolitan Chief Executive for Tamale was allegedly heckled at the conference ground for opposing the enlargement of the party’s Electoral College.
Apart from party functionaries who suffered alleged acts of intimidation, journalists were not spared.
Adom FM reporter was also said to have been manhandled by security of the former President Kufuor when she attempted to interview him.
Dr. Kwesi Jonah said any form of violence is unacceptable and does not augur well for democracy in the country.
He accused all the parties in the country of intolerance with an insatiable desire to suppress minority opinions sometimes in a violent way.
“All parties have serious challenges of internal democracy in the country,” he said and cautioned party activists to desist from such acts.
