Concealer
Purchase a concealer from a professional makeup line for best results. Professional concealers contain more pigment than drugstore brands, which provides better coverage. Look for brands that are designed for scar coverage. "The Manual of Dermatologic Therapeutics: With Essentials of Diagnosis," recommends the cosmetic brands Covermark and Dermablend for camouflaging scars. For a natural look, choose a concealer that closely matches your skin tone. For better scar coverage, pick a concealer that has a corrective hue undertone to cover scars. David E. Bank and Estelle Sobel recommend in their book "Beautiful Skin: Every Woman's Guide to Looking Her Best at Any Age," using green undertones to cover red-toned scars and mauve undertones to cover blue-toned scars.
Apply the concealer first, before any other cosmetics. Apply the concealer over your scars using a cosmetic sponge and blend the foundation into the surrounding areas of skin.
Foundation
As with the concealer, choose a foundation from a professional makeup line to get the best coverage. Choose a foundation that closely matches your skin tone. If you have difficulty choosing the right color of foundation, ask the salesperson at the makeup counter for advice. You can purchase foundations with corrective color undertones for additional skin color correction.
Apply the foundation over your entire face, using a cosmetic sponge. Apply a small amount of foundation at a time and only use enough to make your skin look smooth and scar-free. Too much foundation looks obvious and can make scars appear worse. Blend the foundation well around your neckline so there is no distinguishable mark between the color of your face and the color of your neck.
Powder
Powder is the last step for scar coverage. The powder is not used to camouflage scars, but is rather used to set makeup so that it stays put and does not smear. The powder also gets rid the shiny appearance on skin caused by the concealer and foundation. Use a loose translucent powder for a natural look.
Brush on the translucent powder, using a large powder brush. Apply enough powder to make your foundation look matte (not shiny). If your face becomes shiny throughout the day, blot the excess oil off your face using rice paper sheets.
Body scars
Cover scars on your body using the same makeup techniques used for your face. The only difference is you should use professional makeup designed for use on the body. Body concealers and foundations are often waterproof and are more durable. They stay put better and do not rub off as easily as face makeup does, which is important since makeup on the body tends to be subjected to more rubbing.
