An alibi that a 14-year-old girl he impregnated is his girlfriend has not been enough to save Mubarak Yussif from prosecution.
Even though one commits no offense if one has sexual intercourse with a woman with her consent, the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) are filing charges of defilement against Yussif.
Public Affairs Director of DOVVSU, Chief Superintendent Irene Oppong said although the suspect claims the girl is his girlfriend, the victim is under 16 years and by law, she cannot consent to sex.
Any sexual inter with her therefore is a defilement, she explained.
The school girl is said to reside at Laterbiokorshie with her mother but visited her auntie at Mamobi in December last year where Mubrak Yussif proposed to her and she accepted.
According to Chief Superintendent Irene Oppong, the suspect subsequently lured the victim into a friend’s room and defiled her resulting in the pregnancy.
The suspect is currently on remand.
