A lecturer at the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Science (CKT UTAS), Prof Kwara Nantomah has said that mathematics is the only understandable language globally.
This is because every country in the world uses the same standardised symbols to express mathematics.
Speaking in a conversation on Prime Morning on Wednesday, the BSc and MPhil degree holder in mathematics indicated that the subject is a way of explaining a situation through mathematical expressions, formulas, or equations.
This, according to him, makes it the easiest discipline one can ever think of, although people have misconceived it to be the most difficult subject.
"Mathematics is one of the easiest or simplest disciplines you can think of. This subject is governed by rules. It goes with logic. The mathematics we do here is the same mathematics that is done globally. In fact, mathematics is the language that is spoken globally. If I pick a mathematics script that is written in Russia, I should be able to understand it because we have standardised symbol notation we use to express or describe situations in mathematics," he told Roselyn Felli.
Prof. Nantomah also mentioned that young people develop math phobias as a result of having a poor background in mathematics.
Being the first and youngest professor of pure mathematics in Ghana, the lecturer said the subject is fun when treated the right way.
He asserted that teachers are supposed to use fun and tactical means in teaching the course so as to make it attractive and appreciable for students.
"There’s something we call ‘Mathemagics,’ mathematics that looks like magic. So, until that concept is unveiled, you will see it to be magic," he said.
Prof. Nantomah is currently based in the Upper East region of Ghana, Navrongo and has no intention to relocate to the urban sector. He said he has begun his mathematics advocacy in CKT UTAS, and he is confident that students are gradually picking it up.
