The Minster-designate for the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs and Member of Parliament (MP) for Ho-East, Mrs. Juliana Azumah Mensah, has condemned the recent attack on Mr. Isaac Deku, a Junior High School teacher at Agortime Afegame, by unidentified persons. Mrs. Azumah Mensah described the act as uncalled for, stressing that the teacher was discharging his duty, and should not have been treated in such a way. Mrs. Mensah was speaking at the inauguration of two library projects at Kpetoe, which were constructed by a Korean philanthropist, Madam Thoe Shi-Yong, for schools in the District. She noted that whilst efforts were being made by the government, organisations, groups and individuals to promote education, others were also thwarting such efforts, and noted that the negative incident at Afegame, would definitely affect educational activities in the community. The Minister said discipline was the hallmark of human endeavour, and called on the people to expose the miscreants who attacked the teacher, for the law to deal with them. Touching on the essence of education to the national development process, Mrs. Azumah Mensah pointed out that the government had identified and attached importance to issues concerning education, with emphasis on quality basic education at all levels. She said libraries were cardinal elements in the educational process, which would help pupils and students to cultivate the habit of reading. Mrs. Azumah Mensah therefore urged the youth to be disciplined and take their lessons more seriously, noting that parents should also support the education of their wards, to ensure that they become responsible adults, capable of facing the challenges ahead. The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, Mr. Michael Adzaho, said the attack on Mr. Deku, a native of Adaklu, nearly created security problems in the area because of the conflict surrounding the citing of the district capital at Kpetoe, but luckily for the Assembly, the chiefs and people of Adaklu understood the situation, when a delegation from Afegame apologised to them for what had happened. Mr. Adzaho said three suspected students, in connection with the attack, were suspended, because they also went ahead and destroyed the school’s pineapple farm, due to teachers in the school seizing their mobile phones, which they were using while classes was going on. The DCE said the attackers might have been hired by the students to embark on the act. Mr. Deku, the teacher who was attacked, had to rescue five suspected students who were arrested by the police. According to the DCE, Deku told the police that his attackers, even though he could not identify them, were tall, older, and bigger in size than the students. Source: Chronicle
