Senator Abdallah Wali, the Nigerian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco has enjoined the Golden Eaglets to go all out and win the 10th Orange CAN Under-17 trophy as a special gift to President Goodluck Jonathan, even as he commended the team for their 6-1 win over Black Starlets of Ghana on Sunday.
The Ambassador, who met the team at their Ryad Mogador Menara Hotel before the game, told the players to preserve the country’s rich pedigree at the Under-17 level and show the rest of the world that the Golden Eaglets is the team to beat.
Nigeria is the most successful nation in the tournament's history, with three titles and three runner ups at the global stage and Senator Wali has tasked the current boys to extend the record.
“When any Nigerian national team is playing, we all pay attention but when it is the turn of the Golden Eaglets, we pay special attention,” a well-informed Senator Wali stated.
“In 1985, Nigeria was the first to lift the U-16 World Cup and we have won it three times; a record better than any other country.
“Now it is your turn to keep that tradition as you are now the torch bearers and we have no doubt that you are going to do the country proud following all the spectacular results you have recorded coming into this competition.”
The Ambassador said he and his family would be with the team throughout the tournament in order to keep President Jonathan abreast of the situation within the camp: “I want to assure that President Goodluck Jonathan and Nigerians generally are following you and I'm going to be here with you throughout the tournament to support you.”
He later commended the players for their victory over Ghana and asked them not to rest on their oars.
