MTN has introduced borderless and tariff-free roaming services across five of its operations in Accra, including Botswana, Rwanda, Swaziland, Uganda, and Zambia. A statement from the group says the service applies to both prepaid and contract customers. But an official of MTN Ghana told Adom News there are no plans as yet to implement seamless and tariff-free roaming for customers in Ghana and other countries within the MTN Western and Central Africa (WECA) Region. MTN is the second operator to have offered seamless roaming services after Zain pioneered the concept among its African subsidiaries before selling them to Bharti Airtel. The statement said in addition to the tariff-free roaming, MTN's roaming prepaid customers would also be able to top-up their prepaid phones with locally purchased airtime cards. The statement quoted Group Chief Marketing Officer, Serame Tuakobong as saying "we realize our customers sometimes do not want to roam or even receive incoming calls due to the costs associated with doing so - now, with free incoming calls on offer, MTN is empowering our customers to roam with ease." He noted that historically, roaming charges had presented pricing challenges, with customers accumulating exorbitant monthly bills due to a lack of knowledge about pricing structures and varying tariffs per country. "We are offering our customers another seamless way of maintaining their mobile lifestyles and encourage them to keep their phones switched on while out of the country. This will ensure they remain constantly in touch with their businesses and close contacts," he added,” Tuakobong said. Meanwhile MTN Ghana roaming postpaid and prepaid customers continue to pay $1 per minute as roaming charges for making and or receiving calls whiles outside their country of origin.
