The Director for Education, Research and Training at the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Police Service, ASP Alex Obeng is blaming Thursday morning’s fatal accident in Konongo on irresponsible driving.
21 people have been confirmed dead in the accident that occurred between Konongo and Yawkwei stretch of the Kumasi-Accra highway in the Ashanti region.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday near a Gas filling station between the two towns where the Accra-bound bus from Kumasi with registration number GT 9144 Z overtook a vehicle and collided head-on in the process with an oncoming bus.
Although the immediate cause of the crash was not known, ASP Alex Obeng said on Adom Fm’s Dwaso Nsem that the accident might have been caused by irresponsible driving on the part of one of the drivers, adding that majority of road accidents are avoidable.
Meanwhile, Public Affairs Director at the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) Kwame Kodua Atuahene is worried that the road traffic regulation that was passed in 2004 to instill discipline on our roads, has not had a presidential accent to make it a law.
The law, among others, he said, makes provision for the installation of speed limiters on engines to reduce unnecessary speeding by drivers. He also rejected claims that the accident had spiritual connotations.
Kwame Kodua Atuahene said several accidents could be prevented if the Act had been accented.
