The construction of 47.1 kilometer three-lane dual carriageway with funding from the Millennium Development Corporation of the United State of America was meant to eliminate the endemic traffic congestion on Tetteh Quarshie - Mallam Junction road.
The road was designed speed up free vehicular movement on the busy road linking the port city of Tema and the Central Region.
Barely a year after the road was commissioned, however, it has earned the reputation for accidents and their attendant deaths rather than for traffic easement.
Accidents on the highway have claimed over 70 lives so far; many were pedestrians crushed by speeding vehicles crossing the road mostly, at Abeka Lapaz intersection.
Amongst the pedestrian casualties is an 11-year-old school girl.
Her death angered the youth in the Abeka Lapaz area who blocked the high way with stones, tree stamps and concrete slabs. They accused the designers and the contractors who built the road of not making adequate provisions to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
