Human and vehicular traffic came to a standstill at the Aflao border when the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) flag bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, visited the place on the final lap of his visit to the Volta Region.
At the CEPS Park, where he addressed party faithful and sympathisers, hundreds of people donning party colours and paraphernalia besieged the park to catch a glimpse of the NPP flag bearer.
The massive turn out has been described by residents as unprecedented in the political gathering of the NPP in the area, as it drew curious spectators, even from Togo.
Earlier, Nana Akufo-Addo had visited the palace of Togbui Amenya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, where he addressed a durbar of chiefs and also rendered apology for his inability to honour his previous engagement with them last Friday.
In his address, Nana Akufo-Addo said it had become evidently clear that the people of the Volta Region had begun to see through the vile propaganda that the NPP was an Akan party and were, therefore, shifting their alliance in favour of the NPP.
Describing his tour of the region as one of rediscovery and reconciliation, he noted with concern that the voting pattern of the region in recent years had not been in favour of the NPP, saying this had resulted in the creation of a big gap between the region and the party.
His preoccupation, he noted, was a strong commitment to ensuring that the gap was closed, and that the region would come aboard the NPP's bandwagon for a concerted national development and progress.
The December polls, he said, must not be perceived as a matter of life or death, stressing that there was no reason why Ghanaian blood must be spilled.
Also, he urged the gathering to ignore and reject doomsday preachers.
Nana Akufo-Addo occasionally interspersed his address with French; thereby reaching out to those from the neighbouring French country, Togo, to the admiration of the crowd, who cheered and clapped.
He condemned the actions of those who were bent on setting one ethnic group against the other, thereby engendering tension in the country. He called on all to work towards preserving peace in the country.
The NPP flag bearer said the party in its seven years of governance had achieved what the (P)NDC was unable to accomplish in its 19 years of rule, saying anyone who compared such records without prejudice and hatred would see this obvious truth.
The Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, Togbui Amenya Fiti V, said even though the constituency in particular and the region for that matter had been tagged as an opposition stronghold, it was possible for the NPP to make significant inroads.
He blamed the failure of the party to make progress in the region on executives of the party in the region, and urged Nana to admonish them to reconsider their actions.
The Ketu South Constituency, Togbui Fiti noted, was cosmopolitan and, therefore, favoured a win for the NPP, but called for more discipline on the part of party executives to make that dream possible.
The Chief of Klikor, Togbui Addo, urged politicians to go about their campaign with decorum, so as to ensure that at the end of the elections, the country emerged stronger and united.
