The senior and junior national male and female hockey teams yesterday played testimonial matches in honour of the late President Mills at the water-based Accra Hockey Pitch.
The former president was an ardent follower of the game of hockey. He was an active player in his school days at Achimota through to his days in the University and even as a law lecturer. He continued to play hockey even when he became vice president and he was a member of the veterans’ hockey club.
The late president Mills was the brain behind the construction of the new hockey stadium situated at the heart of Accra. It was for this reason that the National Hockey Association organized two testimonial matches between the senior national male and female hockey teams, the black sticks and their national under- 21 teams yesterday in honor of the late president Mills.
The Ghana hockey fraternity including old members of the citizens and veterans clubs converged at the national hockey pitch as a mark of respect to the former head of state who contributed immensely to the sport.
The president of the Ghana Hockey Association Oko Nikoi Djani told Joy Sports the game formed part of the funeral ceremony of the late president since he was part of the hockey family.“He was hockey and hockey was him so we can’t allow the occasion to pass without gathering his colleagues to watch the sport they loved” Oko Nikoi Djani stated.
