The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to call the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to order over the latter’s decision to call the 2008 election results.
The NDC wants the EC to clear the air over the issue of calling election results by political parties.
Over the weekend, former Information Minister and one of the defeated NPP flag bearer aspirants, Dan Botwe said in Koforidua that the NPP would call the elections when all polling stations have announced their results. He said this in apparent reaction to a warning earlier issued by the NDC’s flag bearer, Prof. J. E. A. Mills. Prof. Mills warned that, if the NPP goes ahead to call the elections, Ghana would be plunged into chaos just as Kenya was.
Speaking to Joy News Monday January 14, 2008, Dan Botwe argued that there is a difference between calling an election and declaring election results. He said calling election results does not necessarily mean declaring the results. He added that, in calling an election, a losing candidate could concede defeat and congratulate the winner.
He said Prof. Mills’ statement in which he said there would be chaos in the country should the NPP call the elections, is full of mischief.
Dan Botwe advanced the argument further by saying that there is no law in Ghana that bars political parties from calling elections.
He said the NPP will still go ahead to call the results and the NDC should not set any laws for them.
Reacting to the NPP’s position, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, said Dan Botwe’s statement is unfortunate. He said when radio stations report results that have been collated and announced at polling stations, it is not the same as when a political party collates the same election results and announces them.
He said such actions could lead to chaos in the country.
He said it is the EC that must do the collation and declaration of election results.
