The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will conduct fresh registration exercise of its members after a frustrating experience with the biometric method caused disaffection.
At a press conference Tuesday, the party's National Chairman, Kofi Portuphy, said the biometric roll "did not meet the standards required to make it qualified to be a biometric register".
A June 2015 exercise to biometrically capture its membership base went wrong after party member complained, the process was ridden with errors.
Parliamentary aspirants reportedly bloated the register with non-NDC members in a bid to win the party's primary.
The register also gave the party a false impression of its numerical strength which was eventually exposed at the polls.
The Kwesi Botchwey Committee report to investigate the party's defeat at the polls corroborated this view from the grassroots.
NDC Greater Accra Regional Chairman promised the party faithful during the October 4 unity walk that “we are now going to ensure that the biometric registration which contributed to our downfall is going to be scrapped and a better system put in place so that the true NDC people will be identified.”
The "better" system has been announced by the National Chairman who has said the registrations will be done manually.
"National Executive Committee has decided that we should adopt a manual process of capturing the names of members at all branches nationwide,” he said.
The fresh exercise is expected to start November and end in December.
The manual registration is expected to be used in the election of branch executives in the last week of January 2018, Kofi Portuphy stated.
