A gender advocate, Mrs. Dorcas Coker-Appiah has welcomed the tabling of the proposed property Rights of Spouses and Interstate Succession Bills in Parliament, saying the Bill when passed into law, will bring relief to countless women who are left penniless in the event of divorce or death of their spouses. The Bill when passed will lead to the equitable sharing of properties acquired by the couple while they lived together as man and wife or while cohabiting when such a union comes to an end.The Bill also states that in a case where children are involved in the marriage, the man will have to vacate the house in which they were staying for the wife and the children to live in, if the couple decide to enter into divorce.Mrs. Dorcas Coker-Appiah gave her backing to the proposed legislation when contributing to debate on the likely effects of the bill on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Wednesday. The Gender Specialist underscored that the new Bill when passed will help married woman to have a fair share of property acquired by the couple. She noted that the under existing laws governing property sharing in the event of death or divorce, women whose marriage rites have not been performed are always on the losing end, because there is no statutory law that covers their contribution to the growth of the union.Callers into the programme, mostly men however expressed misgivings about the proposed laws, saying some women could take advantage of the provisions in the law to fleece their husbands.Others however argued that it would provide security for children in the event of a divorce or death.
