New Juaben Municipal Assembly has banned the use of pan latrines to improve upon sanitation in the area.
Consequently, the use of underground surface holding tanks at public toilets sites has been stopped and the assembly is offering between GH¢100 and GH¢150 cedis as grant to households using pan latrines to construct KVIP or water closets.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Alex Asamoah, who announced this at the assembly's Second Ordinary Meeting at Koforidua, urged assembly members to inform people in the electoral areas about the new measures.
He expressed worry that some land lords and land ladies do not provide toilet facilities, adding that rental laws enjoin them to provide those facilities because public toilets are not for domestic use.
Mr Asamoah said the performance audit of the management of toilets in the municipality is ready and the interim management committee has paid a total of GH6, 298 cedis to the assembly this month.
He noted that a private company, Street Shop, has presented a proposal to build and manage modern toilets in the municipality.
Mr Asamoah said according to the proposal, proceeds from the management of toilets would be shared among the private developer and the assembly.
However, he said added the assembly would be required to prepare sites for the developer to build the facilities.
