The spirit of giving during Christmas has been largely material possessions, often overlooking sustainability.
According to Saviour Kwaku Adzika, popularly known as Corp Sayvee, founder of the CorpNation Foundation, this trend has harmful implications for the environment.
He observed that even simple gifts are frequently packaged with excessive synthetic materials, adding to environmental degradation.
Challenging this norm, a heartwarming act of sustainable giving was spearheaded by Markus Hilger, Western Regional Coordinator of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ Ghana), alongside his children, Joshua and Noah.

Following a family discussion, they decided to present a meaningful gift to the people of New Takoradi by organising a beach cleanup, educating the community on sanitation, and donating essential cleaning tools.
The initiative began with a community cleanup exercise at the New Takoradi beach, during which participants cleared debris and discussed the importance of maintaining clean beaches.
Afterward, Mr. Hilger and his family donated a range of cleaning equipment, including three wheelbarrows, five rakes, one shovel, two spades, five standing brooms, and ten litter-picking rods.

These tools aim to empower the community to sustain regular cleanup efforts and promote environmental responsibility.
Speaking to the gathering, Mr. Hilger highlighted his motivation for the initiative.
“I am not from Ghana, but I live in Ghana, and that alone is reason enough to support this cause. I look forward to seeing the continuation of what we have started, with the community taking ownership of environmental sustainability,” he stated.

This act of giving exemplifies how thoughtful, sustainable gifts can have a lasting impact on communities.
The New Takoradi community is now equipped and inspired to uphold environmental cleanliness, setting an example for others to follow during this festive season and beyond.
Mr. Adzika commended the effort, emphasizing that gifts like these reflect the true spirit of giving—benefiting both people and the planet.
