The National Health Insurance Authority says it will require additional funding to enable it expand coverage to other ailments.
The Scheme currently covers close to 95% of all known disease conditions in Ghana with the exception of cancer. The scheme however covers cervical and breast cancers.
Deputy Director in charge of Strategy and Planning, Eric Ametor-Quarmine, however disclosed to Adom News that the Authority continues to receive several petitions from stakeholders to include the treatment of certain diseases in the NHIS coverage.
He mentioned some of the conditions that the petitions are requesting the Authority to cover as eye care, prostrate cancer which is common in men and certain cancers common to children,
Mr. Ametor-Quarmine however told Adom News that the financial standings of the NHIA cannot allow them to expand its coverage unless the current contribution is increased.
