Nine suspected illegal Chinese miners who were picked up at Manso-Nsiena in the Amansie West District last Thursday in connection with the disturbances between the illegal miners and the youth of the community are still in police custody.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has secured the services of an interpreter to help the police to take down the statements of the Chinese.
The suspects were picked up Thursday evening by Immigration officials with the support of the police and sent to the Regional Police Headquarters in Kumasi for further interrogation.
The Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Augustine Gyenin, told graphic.com. that his outfit would decide the next line of action after the caution statements had been taken from them.
He also disclosed that the police would trace the youth whose pictures were published in the media to assist in investigations.
“We will not allow anyone, whether Ghanaian or foreigner, to take the laws into their own hands and our investigations will not only be centred on the Chinese,” he said.
Last Thursday, the youth of the town, protesting against the galamsey activities of the Chinese, staged a massive demonstration that was met with fierce resistance from the Chinese.
For about 30 minutes the Chinese fired gunshots from pump action guns to scare away the demonstrators, some of whom also went for guns to return fire.
Policemen from Manso Nkwanta, led by the Amansie District Commander, Supt S.K. Kwakye, later went in to prevent further disturbances.
The police retrieved six guns from the Chinese and they are being kept as exhibits
