The Volta River Authority (VRA) has assured the public there will be no power cuts from Wednesday, December 5, 2012 until election results are declared.The assurance comes amid ongoing load shedding exercises being managed by the Electricity Corporation of Ghana and associated agencies.Many Ghanaians have expressed anxieties over the power outages, fearing that nighttime outages in particular could be exploited by electoral fraudsters during the counting of ballots after voting on Friday.The opposition New Patriotic Party is already raising red flags over what it says are plots to rig the December 7 elections that include a nationwide power outage.But the VRA, the generator and supplier of electricity in Ghana, has announced that there will be no power outages during the election period.At a stakeholders' meeting convened by the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) in Accra, VAR Chief Executive Officer Kweku Awotwe said that the organization has taken adequate measures to ensure that there are no power cuts throughout the period.Joy News’ Manasseh Azure Awuni, who was at the meeting, reported that the VRA has a reserve of 150 megawatts and will rely on that for a stable power supply.In addition, the Authority will also cut down electricity supplies to neighbouring Togo in order to shore up supplies for the period during election.The VRA has also entered into talks with the Ivory Coast to request an extra a supply of extra power for Ghana. A delegation is in currently in the country discussing the matter.
