A communication team member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Sarpong says the party will not yield to pressure and rush to court.
He maintains the NPP has within 21 days to go to court as stipulated in the electoral law and thus would carefully complete its investigation into the discrepancies in the presidential results before it presents its case at the Supreme Court.
Kwabena Sarpong was speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday.
The NPP has come under heavy criticisms over what critics say are delays in going to court after it claimed to have evidence to prove that the December 7 election was rigged to favour government.
The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has pooh poohed the NPP assertions of electoral fraud labeling it as political gimmickry to satisfy its agitated supporters.
But Kwabena Sarpong stated unequivocally that the overwhelming evidence the party has gathered so far is enough to overturn the verdict of the Electoral Commission.
He said the decision of the NPP to challenge the election results is to ensure the irregularities that characterized the December 7 polls does not recur in future elections.
Mr. Sarpong indicated that even though the party shares the sentiments of its expectant supporters, the NPP is careful not to be rushed to court.
The NPP man bemoaned the conduct of some people condemning the party for exercising a constitutional mandate.
“Anybody interested in peace will commend the NPP for going to court than engaging in violent activities”.
He added that as a democratic party, the NPP will jealously guard Ghana’s growing democracy which is the beacon on the African continent.
Kwabena Sarpong urged party faithfuls not to respond to provocation and have confidence in the party.
