The New Patriotic Party is supporting the police to deal ruthlessly with anybody found breaking the law under the guise of protesting last week's election result. Party chairman, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey said true party supporters do not engage in lawless acts merely because they have lost an election under circumstances they deem unfair. Some disgruntled supporters of the opposition party have attacked their opponents as well as journalists who projected victory for the incumbent president, John Mahama. Many civil society groups have called on the NPP leaders to control their supporters with the Interior Ministry warning it will cause the arrest of the NPP leaders if the supporters continue to go on rampage. On Thursday, Party Chairman, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey told Joy News’ Jefferson Sackey the police must be firm and arrest any persons engaged in acts of lawlessness. “Lawless acts are committed by lawless people not NPP people” he insisted, adding “any genuine NPP person will not break the law". The NPP chair also apologized profusely to journalists who were attacked by the supporters of the party. He said the party believes in the freedom and independence of the media and will not support any act of intimidation against journalists. Jake Obetsebi Lamptey was also full of praise for the police, especially the Greater Accra Regional Command, whom he said had been professional in their conduct. Except the raid on their Research Office, the party chair said they have collaborated well with the police to ensure peace, law and order in the country. He reminded the NPP supporters that any act of violence will rather court anger for the party and will not serve the supreme interest of a party which believes in the true ideals of democracy and rule of law.
