The Electoral Commission has declared the New Patriotic Party’s candidate, Nana Abu Bonsra winner of the Fomena by-election. He polled 9,585 ballots or 81.84 percent. He was followed by the National Democratic Congress’ Madam Grace Ampofo who polled 2,003 ballots, representing 17.21 percent and the Democratic People's Party’s Madam Augustina Kyei. She had 110 votes or 0.95 votes.Meanwhile the NDC has rejected the results on the grounds that the Electoral Commission included results from two disputed polling centres in the over all results.
The party insisted that the Dadwen and Kyekyewere polling stations were not part of the Fomena constituency because they formed part of the Obuasi constituency. However the Electoral Commission explained that the people of the two disputed areas had always voted under the Fomena constituency.Voting had been very peaceful except an incident during vote-counting when a group of NPP supporters said to be jubilating over provisional results which pointed to an electoral victory for their party marched on the NDC constituency office hurling stones and other objects.Their action was met with retaliation by NDC supporters until military officers deployed to keep the peace intervened. The military were reported to have made an arrest or two.Voting had started peacefully at 7am and ended at 5pm.
