Residents of New Estate in Obuasi appear unenthusiastic about a vaccination exercise started there against the deadly Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis (CSM) disease which has broken out in the community.
Although the disease has claimed six lives, Luv FM’s Kwabena Ampretwum reports that turnout on the first day of the vaccination exercise was not encouraging.
Some residents have expressed fear over the vaccines, stating the vaccines could paralyse them or worst still, result in their death.
Health officials in the area have however allayed fears that the vaccines could produce serious side effects.
The Health Director of Obuasi, Dr. David Amankwah in an interview with Joy News on Friday said despite the low patronage of the vaccination exercise, the health directorate is unperturbed.
He confirmed the reports of fears raised by the residents of the area on the vaccines, stating that even though every vaccine has its side effects, the information going around that it can lead to death is not true.
Dr. Amankwah said the team realises that it will be difficult to vaccinate all residents and that their main focus is the majority of the people which will automatically have a rippling effect.
