One more victim of the Ashaiman gas disaster has died. Abdul Manin died Thursday morning at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
His death brings to two the total number of fatalities recorded in the bizarre incident in which a leaky gas cylinder being used at a food joint exploded, injuring 18 people.
Twelve were treated and discharged at the Tema General Hospital with the remaining six, whose injuries were severe rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. One died a few hours later.
The rest are said to be in stable condition.
Meanwhile one of the survivors who suffered severe burns told Joy News’ Annie Osabutey he nearly killed himself.
He said he could not withstand the excruciating pain that came with the burns.
Narrating how the whole incident occurred, the taxi driver said he had picked a passenger from the General Hospital to Ashaiman that fateful day and decided to buy food to eat.
Just when the food was being served he heard the blast from the cylinder and decided to ran, but the blast was accompanied by a raging fire which engulfed him.
“I was feeling the pain and I was crying. I wanted to kill myself,” he lamented.
Doctors at the Korle-Bu Teaching are calling on the government to honour its promise of providing some equipment needed to treat the patients.
Deputy Local Government Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah assured the government was on course to honour its promise, saying, “By close of day today (Thursday) or latest tomorrow morning or midday we will be able to sort this out,” he told Joy News.
