James, not his real name, has spent the past 18 years at a psychiatric facility after he was found guilty by a court for killing his father.
Doctors say his sometimes violent nature was sparked by schizophrenia; a chronic and severe mental disorder that affects a person’s thinking, feelings, and behaviour.
The 47-year-old man is one of the hundred patients at the Forensic Ward of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.
“The thing pushed me for the first time, it pushed me for the second time, then the third time, I also retaliated,” he told Joy News.
“When day broke, they said I have killed my father, so that’s my tragedy,” the patient narrated the circumstance that brought him to the Forensic Ward to the reporter.
According to James, he gets overwhelmed with sadness anytime thoughts of that dark incident comes to mind.
James is determined to see a brighter day as he finds solace in music.
Using his voice to praise and glorify God, he is one of the founding members of the choir at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.
Together with some of his colleagues, they worship and magnify their Maker through various songs.
