Former President Jerry John Rawlings on Friday, December 14, recalled the difficult moments he endured some decades ago while bringing in some hybrid coconut seedlings from Nicaragua.
According to him, the Captain of the aircraft he had boarded announced that the aircraft was heavy and therefore some luggage including his precious coconut seedlings, was going to be dropped.
He told a gathering of religious leaders, politicians and businessmen and women at a thanksgiving service of the Jospong Group that he refused to allow the coconut seedlings to be dropped and made sure he brought them to Ghana and planted at the Osu Castle and his Ridge residence.
Today, he is enjoying the fruits of five of the trees that survived out of the 17 he planted, he announced to the amusement of the crowd.
